The questions that may arise when you think about E-Car
With an innovative scheme like E-Car there is a big chance that you have some questions about what we do for the people in Poplar. We have been operating E-Car for 2 years now and combined our drivers have driven over thousands and thousands of miles. In East London we have over 200 happy members with hopefully many more to come. While operating the last years in Poplar we have learned a lot from you by listening on the phone, reading your emails or even by meeting some of you during events. We have put all your questions together in a short FAQs
First of all; why should I join E-Car?
Owning a car can be a hassle and extremely expensive, why not being smarter and only pay for those hours you actually drive. This is possible with our pay-as-you-go car-sharing scheme, which means you only pay if you book and use the car. Public transport comes close to E-Car but isn’t as cheap in many cases. Also it doesn’t give you the comfort to travel from door to door, bring your favourite stuff… and people (and share the costs)! So why not E-Car all the way?
How do I Join E-car?
You can join E-Car by signing up through www.e-carclub.org/join-now. It only takes you a few minutes to join E-Car and a member of our team will get in touch with you. We aim to contact you within 24 hours to complete your membership, you will receive your membership pack within 5-7 days.
What does this membership mean?
In order to become member you only need pay a one-off joining fee and this makes you a lifetime member. Becoming an E-Car member grants you 24/7 unlimited access to our entire fleet around the UK… all this for only £50 joining fee, your lifetime long!
Am I eligible to hire E-Cars?
We are happy to welcome anyone who has a full driving license for at least 12 months and is 19 years or older… there is no upper age limit. Unfortunately we need to be strict and we can’t accept everybody in terms of points on the license. We can’t accept more than 6 point or serious previous offences.
How soon can I start driving?
After you signed up it takes 5-7 working days to receive your membership package. It is possible that you would like to start driving sooner. Therefore we offer a special service called Express Membership, this costs £25 extra (we will top-up your account with £25 driving credit) and you will be ready to drive-off within 24 hours!
Is driving an electric car different from driving a normal car?
Driving an electric car is basically the same as driving a normal automatic petrol car. The only difference is you will be quietly cruising around East London’s streets. Noise complaints are a thing of the past.
How much does it cost?
We believe in a transparent and fair pricing system. First, you pay a one-off joining fee (£50) to become E-Car member, second you pay an all-inclusive hourly fee (£5.50). This is including insurance, fuel and everything else. We hate hidden costs too!
Where can I charge?
There is a fantastic network of charging points across the country, however, if you do need to charge your car during you booking (away from its home hub) make sure you plan your journey ahead. You can do this by checking charging point on www.zap-map.com or by giving us a call. There are over tens of thousands charging points in the UK – E-Cars will not be able to use all of these charging points, but the map gives you a good idea as to the coverage of charging points near you.
How far can I drive?
You can drive as far as you like, there is no limit and we don’t charge you per mile like many car rental companies do. Recently we had a member who drove from Joan O’ Groats to Lands’ End and back, which is an 1840 mile drive. Our car’s cover over 95% of average UK journeys on a single charge.
With electric cars you need to recharge every 70-90 miles (depending on your driving style) to refill ‘the tank’ just like with any other car. With the charge-card provided in the E-Car’s you have free access to the ever-growing network of rapid charge points across the UK (fully recharging in less than 30 minutes).

You easily make your booking 24/7 with our online booking system. You can also make a booking over the phone by calling us on +44 (0) 20 3603 2259 between 08:00 and 20:00. Our customer service team is more than happy to help you with your booking.
