Shuffle Chinese New Year
Friday 3rd February, 6:00pm
6.00pm – 11.45pm £15 with meal
Join us for a Chinese New Year Celebration and the screening of two films that sum up the year that was 2016 and set us on the path for the journey ahead, with a deeper understanding of what drives us apart and holds us together.
Enjoy a home-cooked meal by the East London Chinese Community, at their Mile End base, accompanied by lychee wine cocktails! All profits go towards community activities hosted at Southern Grove Community Centre.
There will be two films before and after dinner, firstly a recent documentary, ‘The Divide’ directed by Katharine Round. The director will join us at dinner for a discussion after the film. The Divide tells the story of 7 individuals striving for a better life in the modern day US and UK. It explores the gap between the rich and the poor and what an increase in this most stark divide really means for everyone in our society.
The second film, ‘A Time To Live, A Time To Die’ a 1985 film by Hou Hsiao-Hsien is a beautifully controlled coming of age story about a family moving from China to Taiwan. A Time To Live and a Time To Die focuses on the widening generation gap in a family cut off from its cultural roots.
This event is a collaboration with East End Homes, East London Chinese Community Centre and Shuffle. All profits go towards community activities hosted at Southern Grove Community Centre.
We hope to see you there at this exciting and lovely little warm up before our main festival in the summer!
