The Poplar Partnership is raising funds to commemorate and remember the 18 children who were killed by a bomb in Upper North Street School in June 1917. The funeral for the 18 children, most of whom were 5 years old, was the biggest funeral London had ever seen outside a state funeral. As a result, the direction of the war changed because so many people joined up.

Ten schools in Poplar will be part of a project encouraging pupils to research and retell the history of their local area with their own voices; it will also consider what was happening in the rest of the world at the time of WWI.

Please sign up to become a member of the Co-op (closest branch in Chrisp Street Market) and select the Poplar Partnership as your chosen charity: this will help raise funds for an official event next year to be held in All Saints Church and Poplar Recreation Grounds to mark 100 years since this tragic event but to celebrate the lives and futures of the children living in Poplar today.
