Leadership programme for young people launches in Tower Hamlets
The programme, organised by housing association Poplar HARCA, is open to anyone aged between 16 and 21 with an interest in housing, injustice, community, youth work or campaigning for young people’s rights. It will include guest speakers from the National Housing Federation, skills master classes and interactive learning.
Participants of the programme will benefit from the opportunity to boost their CVs and improve their employment prospects.
“The programme has a focus on housing and we hope some participants will progress into roles on a re-launched youth empowerment board”, says Wei Du, Community Empowerment Coordinator at Poplar HARCA. Members of the Youth Empowerment Board have previously been involved in the design and programme of the multimillion pound Spotlight Youth Centre.
“No experience or skills are needed to attend the training”, explains Sally Anthony. “We are looking for people who want to speak up about issues affecting their local area, or people who want to grow in confidence in how to make their voices heard”.
On completion of the programme, young people will receive a certificate and invited to attend a celebration event in March.
The programme will take place on Wednesdays 6.00pm – 8.00pm at The Spotlight Centre by Langdon Park in Poplar from 22nd February to 22nd March.
16 to 21 year olds in Tower Hamlets can apply by filling out an online registration form by 14th February. Applicants will then be contacted to arrange a formal interview.
