Best Sellers – bye-bye and thank you
Chrisp Street Market favourite (Steve’s) Best Sellers will be celebrating their last Christmas in the market this year, ahead of owner Carle Wootton’s tough decision to retire. Steve’s Best Sellers’ last day of trading is Saturday 19th January 2019.
Carle grew up in Cold Harbour, Poplar and attended St Mattias and then Stepney Green schools. He has worked in Chrisp Street Market for over 50 years, starting off as the ‘tea boy’ for various stallholders before moving on to a stall of his own. He moved in to a shop in the old arcade and then the first ‘Steve’s’ was born next to the Prince of Wales pub (now Callaghans) before moving to the current site in 1990.
The shop has always been a family affair. You would often find Carle’s mum serving behind the till. Since the beginning, all of Carle’s 5 sisters and 2 brothers have helped out.
Carle said: “The Market will always be special and I’ll be back regularly to see the transformation taking place over the next few years. The changes will be good for the area there are new people moving in, alongside the people that have lived here for years – and more people means more opportunity for businesses. “It’s exciting, but I’ve been in Chrisp Street Market for over half a century so, for me, it’s time to slow down a bit and enjoy spending some valuable time with my grandchildren.”
Steve Stride, Chief Executive of Poplar HARCA, Chrisp Street’s landlord, said: “I’ve shopped with Carle for 40 years. I’ll be sad to see him go and wish him a very happy retirement.”
Steve’s Best Sellers’ last day of trading is Saturday 19th January 2019. All of the staff that have worked for Carle over the years have been invited back to do a stint on the shop floor and then celebrate his retirement at a staff party. Carle is expecting around 100 current and former staff to come along.
Pop in and say goodbye, there will be some guaranteed bargains to be had.
