Lifeline for subletters – New Year key amnesty
Poplar HARCA is offering an amnesty to tenants illegally subletting their homes. From 1st January until 28th February 2018 you can hand back the keys and end your tenancy, no questions asked.
During the amnesty, the reward for anyone who reports an illegally sublet property will be doubled. You can pick up a £1000 reward for information leading to the recovery of a property.
After 1st March 2018 however, maximum sentences in the courts will be sought. This could mean up to two years in prison and fines of up to £50,000 and recovery not only of the property but also the proceeds from renting it out and all the legal costs.
Poplar HARCA’s Counter Fraud Manager, Avril Drummond said: “I am closing in on the criminal tenants. We have already recovered 40 properties, which were being illegally occupied, saving Poplar HARCA over £5.5Million. We are also now starting to take out criminal prosecutions on those more serious offenders. We have a zero tolerance to any fraud committed against us, and to other tenants and residents.”
The Government estimates that 98,000 tenancies are illegally sublet across the UK. It goes against the grain not to take every one through the Courts but amnesties have recovered a lot of homes in other places. It’s a final chance to do the right thing and walk away.
Please note that if we have already served you with Notices, and the matter has been referred to Court, you will not be able to take advantage of this amnesty.
