Manorfield to represent Tower Hamlets at London School Games

Manorfield Primary School will represent Tower Hamlets in four different sports at the London School Games this season after coming out on top in football, netball, basketball and badminton during the inter-school competition series.

After an inspiring result at the LSG BMX Spring Series that saw Manorfield take home both silver and bronze in the girls’ category and gold in the boys’, the other teams that have made it through to the County Finals are ready and raring to go.

Alongside Manorfield’s number-one ranking in the borough, the KS2 boy’s football team came spectacularly close to representing West Ham United at the forthcoming Premier League tournament after finishing as runners-up in the WHU Regional Finals.

It says a lot that Manorfield have excelled in these games: the school takes pride in its sports education and are keen to facilitate as great a variety as possible due to the confidence, joy and appetite for learning that sport fosters in our students. These activities also link the school to the wider community in myriad ways, offering pupils inspiration and time for socialising in equal measure. There are regular trips to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park where pupils watch the London Lions basketball team and London Pulse netball team in action: we’re happy to see how these outings have led students to excel in both these areas.

The afterschool clubs Manorfield has run this term include dodgeball, judo and BMX, giving pupils the chance to engage with sports less readily available in order to find the type that suits them in particular. The basketball team squeeze in a half-hour training session every lunchtime, whilst each year-group has a football session at the Teviot Centre and another at the MPS Stadium once a week, helping to push sport as the area where education and ambition are developed off the school grounds. Finally, from May through to November Manorfield will attend bowls sessions at Poplar Bowls Club: these are encouraged for children who struggle either socially or physically, so that everyone at the school is given the opportunity to partake in the joy and educational benefits that this kind of play can bring.
