Poplar resident hit with £66,600 illegal subletting order

Kamal Ali, the tenant of 23 Munden House, Bromley By Bow, has to pay landlord Poplar HARCA £66,600 because he illegally sub letting his social tenancy.  Acting on a tip-off, HARCA’s Counter-Fraud Manager Avril Drummond discovered the one-bed property was illegally let since 2010.   Mr Ali, who was the joint-owner of a property in Ilford, also attempted to fraudulently claim a £102,000 discount by applying for the Right to Buy.

At Bow County Court last month, HARCA successfully obtained an Unlawful Profit Order for £58,885.58, plus £976 for rent arrears and £6,739.80 costs.

Avril Drummond said ‘Illegally sub-letting a social tenancy will mean you not only lose the property, but you also have to pay back the money you have made.   Mr Ali thought he had found a risk-free way to make money.  He was very wrong.’
